The House The main building was first restored in 1997, with great respect for the original structure, which was built entirely with sandstone: each single stone found along the fields was used to raise the building. This makes experts suppose that the original structure may date back at least to the 16th cent. Bricks were added during the restoration, as to improve the whole structure. The house was then modernized in 2012, the heating system was replaced and now ensures that the house is warm year round. The house measures 485 sq.m. ca. and it develops on 2 floors: Ground Floor: It is the convivial area: you access the main entrance, which is a long, stone-built corridor with arches on both sides. On the right you step into the lovely dining room, characterized by an original stone tank, connected to the nearby grotto: it seems it could be the place where they pressed grapes, whose liquid flowed down to the grotto. Opposite the dining room, there’s a cosy sitting room, directly connected to the built-in kitchen. Arches and openings are like ornate passages, from which to peer from room to room. Every single stone and every single cotto tile have been cleaned and reused during the renovation works: this gives the whole house an authentic feeling. On this floor you can also find a guest bathroom, a double bedroom with en-suite bathroom, a useful laundry room and storage rooms. Still on the same floor, there is an area which could be fully independent thanks to a direct access from the garden: it is composed of an open-plan kitchen/living room, a double bedroom and a bathroom. This space is separated from the main area by a door, which will give you two independent lodgings or a single home according to your needs. First Floor: The first floor is accessible via an internal staircase made of wood and iron and also via the typical external staircase that ends with a loggia. This is the sleeping area, but it has been rearranged to look almost like an independent part of the house: a number of steps lead you up and down, arches lead you through the various rooms. After the landing there is a delightful sitting room with an original fireplace. The rest of the space is occupied by a magnificent master bedroom with private bathroom and balcony with stunning views of the garden and the surrounding countryside. The main feature of this floor that immediately catches the eye are the double heights, that culminate in terracotta tiles and wooden beams, which give an airy and bright feeling to all rooms. The meticulous restoration of the time was intended to leave all the original architectural features unaltered, as well as most of the original materials. The ground floor – originally and typically used as stables and cellars – was lowered to make it suitable as a habitable area, but the stones were preserved. During the restoration they also took great care of the stability and structural strength of the building. Inside the structure, a metal mesh still connects all the floors and the roof. It seems that in ancient times the property housed a countryside hermitage or a small monastery. As a matter of facts, the whole area was subject to the dominion of the Farfensi friars, who chose the nearby Santa Vittoria in Matenano as their permanent site. The Garage The property includes a very useful garage of about 75 sq.m., suitable for 3 cars, which is partly used as a technical room and storage. It also houses the pellet storage for the heating system, all of which is automated.
