The Gulf of The Poets, a pearl of the Mediterranean with character villages, craggy coves and sandy beaches was home to many poets and writers including Shelley, Byron and D. H. Lawrence. The bay offers views to the three islands at its’ tip. Dotted around the bay are some of the most picturesque villages of the Mediterranean. There is great sailing around the bay and on to the Cinque Terre with Elba and the Tuscan islands accessible for the more professional sailors! Lerici and San Terenzo offer golden sandy beaches with views to the islands and Fischerino and Tellaro, with their steep craggy beaches and coves, pretty piazzas and cobbled lanes host some of the best restaurants in the area. The easiest way to get around the gulf is by boat which run between Lerici, La Spezia and Portovenere or on to The Cinque Terre (UNESCO World Heritage site), five villages strung along the terraced cliffs. These villages are completely unspoilt and, until recently, could only be reached by boat or by train. Anyone visiting the Cinque Terre should take a walk along the cliff paths which link one village to the next, stop in one of the bars or restaurants and try the anchovies marinated in olive oil and garlic, served with bread and delicate white wine made from the grapes that grow up the steep terraces above the villages. Lerici itself is dominated by the castle with the old village of pastel coloured buildings huddled on the steep hill dropping down to the sea and the marina. The back streets of Lerici have many colourful shops and restaurants. The view stretches over the whole of the Gulf of the Poets, with the islands of Palmaria and Tino in full view. Distances: Pietrasanta 40 km, Forte dei Marmi 45 km, Pisa (airport) 65 kms, Lucca 65 kms, Portofino 90km, Genoa (airport) 110km, Florence 130 kms.
